Farewell to Our Founder, Harlan Pedersen

It is with great respect and remembrance that we share news of the passing of Harlan Pedersen, founder of PBWS Architects. After serving in the merchant marines during WWII, Harlan earned his architecture degree from USC and opened his Pasadena practice in 1957. His adventurous spirit, hands-on design approach, and unwavering commitment to clients shaped the foundation of our firm.

Harlan believed that exploration—whether across oceans or through design—was key to solving problems. His travels gave him a unique perspective and a creative edge that inspired his work and those around him.

He retired in 1990 to Orcas Island, where he continued designing homes and embracing life—sailing across oceans and flying to the Arctic Circle. He lived to be 100, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and a loving family.

Fair winds and following seas, Harlan. Thank you for charting our course.
